Chapter 11

By the time Jennifer had handed Orly off to Amanda and left a message for the museum director to say she wouldn’t make their appointment at 11, she was ready to go.

Backing the Mercedes carefully out of the guesthouse’s garage, she turned on the windshield wipers to scrape the light mist off the window and pulled out onto the main road. Traffic in this part of Bastogne was light and her GPS was working well, so she turned on the radio to have some music on her drive. A bouncy techno pop song came on, sung in English, and she smiled as she drove. As much as she loved her little dog, it was nice sometimes to have a bit of a break and not worry about his needs every second. Having Amanda take Orly for a few hours gave her some time to herself, and she felt almost guilty at how much she enjoyed it.

Maybe this is what it’s like being a mom, she thought. Love the kid, but it’s nice to get some time away once in a while.

As she got nearer to town the buildings got closer together and more cars were on the road. Open fields gave way to warehouses and occasional offices, tucked back neatly from the straight, clean roads. She was driving past an open sports stadium for a large school when she glanced in the rearview mirror, and something caught her eye.

She’d seen that car before.

The car following her.

It looked like the black BMW sedan Jennifer had seen parked about a half block away from the guesthouse when she left.

The sedan was tucked back a couple of car lengths behind her, with a red Renault in front of it and between them, but it was hugging the edge of the street, so the driver was visible.

As if he were keeping an eye on her.

Eyes flicking between her mirror and the road ahead of her, Jennifer put on her right turn signal and swung around the next corner. Within two seconds, a familiar black shape turned the corner.

She sighed. She had to be sure. She drove for another half mile or so, through an increasingly commercial area with long warehouses and open lumber yards, then turned right again with no turn signal, and stomped on the gas pedal. The Mercedes was a fantastic machine, smoothly jumping to high speed without so much as a ripple.

There was a moment when she thought her suspicions had been wrong.

But she wasn’t. The BMW turned the corner, then slowly accelerated

This was definitely more than she’d bargained on for lunchtime.

Cranking the wheel to the left, she didn’t slow down as she barreled around the corner, but after about a hundred yards she stepped on the brake and jerked the wheel to the right, whipping into a space in front of a tall white delivery truck. Yanking her phone out of her purse, she waited.

She didn’t have long to wait. The BMW appeared in just a couple of seconds, the driver’s head moving side to side as he searched.
